Title: Power Nailer
Post by cutting42 on Apr 16th, 2004, 5:50pm

Hi All

My big summer project is a large Wendy/Play house for the ankle biters to play in. I am getting all the plans and new tools (dribble dribble) I need together and was wondering about a powered nail gun of some sort. I will be using a lot of shiplap and shingles as well as the framing. Is it worth getting or hiring one. I noticed that S******x have a very lightweight one for 20 notes

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/sea/searchresults.jsp;jsessionid=J5SORGKQWDZL5CJO2C3CIIQ?_dyncharset=UTF-8&q=nail+master&n=&pn=1&pd=1&pi=1&cn=1&cd=1&x=0&y=0

and wondered if it would work for the shingles/shiplap etc. Obviously a decent Paslode or pneumatic system would be a better machine but for 20 quid i don't mind chucking it after the project.

What do others recommend?

Cheers

Gareth

That electric nailer only uses brads (panel pins) so is only really used for light fixing. I just noticed that it only goes up to 25mm brads to wouldn't hold shiplap anyway.
Brads would be useless in shingles as they would go right through.
Similarly with shiplap. You could use it for secret nailing but it will have little holding power so the shiplap is likely to need gluing which isn't advisable.

Sounded a bit to good to be true, mind you still might come in handy for other things.

Does this mean that a power nailer is a good thing? If so what are the recommends for buying. Air gun or electric ?? and what makes.

Cheers

You're better off getting a comressor for an air gun.
That's just the start, you will find many uses for the compressor as you get more tools to fit. Paint sprayers, tyre inflators (saves using a foot pump) air lines. A great many tools are powered by air. Some need more power than many small compressors can give but decide for yourself what you are likely to need in the future.

I bought the Ferm air nailor kit from S******X (Why do you all have it in for them, I have never had any problems with them) about a year ago and use it for all sorts of jobs. It came with the compressor, nail gun, tyre inflator, spray gun and a blower which comes in very useful. All that lot for less than £100 so I have had my monies worth if it packed in tomorrow.

If you look in the Axminster (am I allowed to mention them?  ;)) catalogue they have plenty of kit at the budget end of the scale.

I also have an electric nailor that is pretty useless as it needs both hands to operate and doesn't always set the brad the correct distance in.
