Title: Definitely Not DIY
Post by Little_Miss_DIY on May 18th, 2004, 9:54pm

Evening all  :)

Just looking for a bit of reassurance I suppose  :-/

Now that the kitchen units and worktops have been fitted, I need the electrics sorting out.

Apparently, the previous owners had done a bit of a bodge job with the wiring therefore, I've been advised that i'll need the following:

12 way fuse
Trips x 7
Cooker socket
6" cable x 9 metres
2.5" cable x 25 metres
Sockets x 4
Double sockets x 5
Spur fuse switches x 5

???  This all means very little to me and I wouldn't have a clue what sort of cost would be involved.

If there's anything i've missed, i'll do my best to answer.

Thanks

Being a kitchen it might be best to seek professional help with electrical work. Just getting a shopping list of bits and pieces won't be all that meaningful I'm afraid, because there are issues with electrical regulations which might make your house uninsurable if it isn't done properly.

Though I do electrical work I won't touch kitchens and bathrooms because there are particular requirements which could make the installation dangerous.

Oh! No, wouldn't dream of attempting it myself  :o

I'd probably blow myself up  ;D

Just wondered if its worth buying the bits & bobs in advance or whether to leave well alone & let the professional do the lot   :)

One way to check this out is to pop into a DIY shed to spot check some prices.

A double socket can be had for a couple of quid if you know where to look, so if you get charged 20 quid for each one there might be a bit of markup going on.....but anything under a fiver is probably okay (there's a fair range of prices on sockets).

Yep. Most sparks will be buying down at the local wholesalers, who are mostly cheaper than the 'sheds' to begin with, especially as most wholesalers will give further discount to their regular customers.

I get -30% from mine on their catalogue prices. Mark the catalogue price up 40% to allow for the VAT and transport/shopping time and my margin, so it's still cheaper than most shed prices by the time it gets to the customer but I can make a profit too.

How do others work it out?

Not too sure about that as a lot of the sheds sell junk products coz they are cheap and often cheaper than the proper materials available from electrical wholesales and after discount.

Little_Miss: Get a quote and ask them to show cost of parts, any reluctant to do so will almost certainly be ripping you off on parts. Then when ya  have the quote ask here again and we can tell ya what we pay for them and if what you are being charged overall is reasonable.

On the other hand we'll all be round tonight to do the job  ;D

A shopping list of items is a bit meaningless (as are things like -

12 way fuse ? I assume ya mean a new CU? Why a new CU?

Trips x 7 ? I assume ya mean MCB's and ditto

Cooker socket OK

6" cable x 9 metres ? I assume ya mean 6.00 mm csa t/e cable for cokker cct...umm a bit light I wud stick in 10mm even if ya dont need it now.

2.5" cable x 25 metres ? I assume ya mean 2.5 mm csa t/e cable

Sockets x 4 OK

Double sockets x 5 OK

Spur fuse switches x 5 I assume for the above sockets and extractor fan/hood lights etc.?

Plonkers are people who soldier on regardless never trying to increase their knowledge level by asking those who know the answers.

You are hereby released from the plonkers category :)
