Title: Recommended size of a single garage
Post by CWatters on Jun 14th, 2005, 2:29pm

According to google most councils seem to recommend that the internal width of a single garage is 2.4 meters.

Anyone know of any official bodies recommending a wider minimum ?

I've been experimenting today and I would be surprised if many people could open the door wide enough to get out of their cars in a garage that narrow. Even though our car is narrower than a Ford Focus I was unable to get out when I opened the door to that width.

Most pre made sectional garages are 16'x8' (4.8mx2.4m) with a 7'6" door.
This has always been the standard size in this country.
Other countries have different sizes as standard.
My garage in South Africa was 20'x10' which was the norm there for small garages.
In USA  garages are a lot wider as they expect to be able to open all doors fully inside the garage.
I have a friend in yankee land who has a 60'x40' garage and looks on it as a normal 4 car one.

Single garages in the UK are a joke.  No wonder we all leave our cars out.

Cars have got much wider over the years plus door mirrors adding to the width, but single garages have remained at 8 feet wide.

The muppets who design stuff like this need locking up, especially when they put a brick pier just where the car doors need to swing open.

IMHO a single garage need to be minimum 9 feet wide internally with an 8 foot wide door.  That way, as I get older, I've more chance of getting in the garage without major damage.................

C'mon Jerry -

No one uses their garage to store their car - most are full of car-boot/ebayable junk!

You're right TT, in fact I have converted many integral garages to utility rooms/shower rooms/studys/granny flats etc.

It seems a garage for the car is a bit old fashioned nowadays.  ???

Strange you should say that! My first ever job as a self-employed spark was to wire a former garage which was being divided into an office, a bathroom/sauna and a utility room!

No planning permission sought, refused or granted and job done! No Part p either (mind you, there still isn't!)

Good little earner that one - have been back a few times to sort other bit out for em too - kitchen, one bedroom and other stuff. Good repeat-business!
