Ok I'm holding one. It's a male and female fixing. You would use it to bind things together firmly (Say lots of sheets of paper) Both ends have big flat ends and the inch long mele screws into the inside of the inch long female. When fully screwed together it looks like a little set of wheels for a train set or similar.

Does anyone in the world know what it's called??? Please!!!

They are called either joint connector bolts or back to back bolts.

They're only an inch long, Keith, so more likely to be the bolt used to join kitchen cabinets to one another. The ones that go through the pre-drilled holes in the side panels. They're about 5mm diameter.

Can't find an illustration for them. Got millions spare in the workshop so may have to take a photgraph and post it, although that ain't gonna help the OP in naming them! :-/

Think it's this (and suggest asking for a source for them on a kitchen fitter's forum?)...

It's alright Lec. Once Al had posted his link, as I said, the image became redundant and so I deleted it from Tinypic. But still don't know why it didn't appear earlier - although it was there when first posted!

Anyway, mystery no more.
