Hi. My first post so here goes. Two questions for you:
(1) Is fitting a shower unit a one-man job for a professional?
(2) Another 'professional', when we had a new kitchen fitted, took the waste pipe from the sinks and cut it into the Soil Stack pipe (right words?). He simply cut a hole into the Soil Stack pipe, pushed the pipe through the hole and then sealed the hole with silicon. He cut the hole too high and as a result the waste pipe sloped upwards to the hole.
Another plumber has just fitted the special adaptor and says its now AOK but both the pipe and the hole are in the same place so won't the waste pipe still have an upward slope to the hole? (Hoping this makes sense.) :-?

(1) In short 'Yes'. If it involves fitting large/heavy/glass screens/doors/panels, an extra pair of hands can be useful.

(2) Waste pipes should be connected to a soil stack using a 'strap on boss' or a similar fitting designed for the job. They should also flow continuously down hill otherwise you will get standing waste water gathering at the lower points in the run which will inevitably cause blockages, leaks around the joints and if outside, they will freeze solid.

Thank you Headrush. 1. Shower Unit. The Smurf from Brighouse who fitted mine did it on his own. The base wasn't flat and he didn't fit the shower unit correctly onto the base = major problems that had to be sorted out by another contractor. 2, Sink problem. The owner of the Home 'Improvement' company came and sorted it out himself. (He said he'd fallen out with his plumber.) He used the thing to which you refer.

I didn't believe what he said and got another plumber to check the work. The joint into the Soil Stack is leaking (out of sight) & the pipe itself still runs uphill. The second plumber will sort it and I'll then have to chase the Home Improvement guy to pay it. It looks as if he did the original work anyway, not a plumber.

He was recommended!!! A major DIY supplier says I should report both contactors - they might have left a trail of disaster behind them for some poor old folk and are also taking work our of the hands of reputable contractors. That's a hard one for me to decide on.

sorry for the delay Headrush - I've been away.

Do Building Regs cover work such as fitting new waste pipes, cutting them into the Soil Stack?
(Edit: Add - The Government's pdf is totally confusing apart for the "You, the houseowner, are responsible - criminal offence - etc etc.

Approved Doc H covers most things drainage.

As above the pipe should have gone into a boss pipe or strap-on-boss, unfortunately if they bodged it don't pay or take civil action to get it put right, which, could mean cutting a section of pipe out and using the correct fittings

thanks, thescruff. Another plumber came and found that
(1) the strap-on boss wasn't tightened, instead of solvent weld the owner of the Home "Improvement" (!!!) firm stuffed the joint with clear silicon and
(2) the fall of the wastepipe from the sink appeared to have been greatly improved but was actually then connected to two elbow joints that took it almost vertically!

Sadly my wife paid him but is still waiting for an invoice/receipt.

Best way there is to get 2more bends and set the pipe back up to the correct height, so in affect you are forming a running trap.

To get the correct height you can buy single socket bends with a spigot the other end so they fit together without pipe bewteen them

Thanks thescruff.

I goy another plumber in - he replaced all the pipework with a custom-built set, sorted out the strap-on boss, and all is well.

The owner of the Home "improvement" company had to expand the hole in the end panel (to allow access for the boss job), fit a temporary prop to support the weight, than after the plumber had finished he fitted a custom-built frame so that everything is now sorted.

He even reimbursed us for the new plumber's work with no moans (well - he initially told me to b-off but I helped him see the wisdom is paying us.)
