Title: Oil-based paint over water-based primer? Post by Zac on May 20th, 2016, 12:59am I renewed some exterior woodwork, which I am going to paint with oil-based paint. I first primed the wood with a B&Q primer which was erroneously described as "solvent based" on their website. When I came to clean the paint brush I realized the primer was water based. Can I use oil-based paint over this primer as this is the same paint that I've used on the surrounding woodwork which didn't need renewing? Thanks for any advice on this. |

Post by woodsmith on May 20th, 2016, 7:08am You should be fine putting oil based onto a water based primer, it's the other pay round, putting a water based finish on top of oil based paint, that can cause a problem. If in doubt try a small area or get a scrap of timber and paint that first. I would give it a light sand first to create a key and then don't apply the paint too thickly, better to put on 3 thin coats than 2 thick ones. |
