Title: Electric car charging point Post by CWatters on Oct 10th, 2016, 6:30pm If I was to have a car charging point installed it would make sense for it to be located in/on my garage rather than the wall of my house. I already have a garage CU fed by a 32A MCB in the CU in the house and underground SWA cable. One web site says.. Quote:
I'm aware I will have to physically check the cable size/cross section and length etc but cant do that at the moment. I think the current distance is around 25-30m (House CU to Garage CU) but it would be more like 35-40m from the house CU to charging point. Online calculators suggest the existing cable to the garage is probably 6sqmm but might be 10sqmm if I'm lucky. Am I correct in assuming that if it's 10sqmm I'll probably be OK but it's 6sqmm it will be marginal or need upgrading? |
Title: Re: Electric car charging point Post by Lectrician on Oct 12th, 2016, 5:54pm It depends what else is being used in the garage? 7Kw is far better. It is recommended to be done in 10mm on a 40amp type C MCB. |
Title: Re: Electric car charging point Post by CWatters on Oct 13th, 2016, 5:54pm There are several 13A sockets and lights in the garage but not currently used for anything significant. However part of the garage would be ideal as a workshop so might get used for more in the future. Ok so it looks like I will be upgrading the cable if it's currently 6sqmm but might get away with it if it's 10mm already. |
