Title: Floor repair after leak Post by TrevorP on Dec 9th, 2016, 4:01pm We recently had an underfloor leak from central heating pipe, fault found, floor potion dug up and pipe repaired. The pipes were covered in a very coarse sand with loads of "shiny flex of material" added, then a 50mm layer of concrete and then 20mm of asphalt, for the damp-proof, I assume. My question is what should I use to repair, would just a plain coarse sand mix over pipes, then a sand and cement mix with a waterproof adaptive in on top, as the damp-proof be ok? I have never seen the material they used to cover the pipes before, it was almost a grit type, any ideas what it was? Hope someone could advise how I should fill this hole. Thanks Trevor |

Title: Re: Floor repair after leak Post by londonman on Dec 10th, 2016, 10:06am I think that your 'shiny' stuff is vermiculite or some such. It's often used as an insulation material and in the case of UFH pipes, protects the pipes from the concrete/cement/screed. |
Title: Re: Floor repair after leak Post by TrevorP on Dec 10th, 2016, 1:50pm They are copper pipes, and was going to wrap in Denso tape and cover as previous posts. Vermiculite, can you still get this stuff? |
Title: Re: Floor repair after leak Post by woodsmith on Dec 11th, 2016, 7:41am Yes, you buy it in bags from any decent builders merchant |
Title: Re: Floor repair after leak Post by TrevorP on Dec 11th, 2016, 12:08pm Hi, thanks for reply, someone has just told me that they use it in garden centres, is this the same as you are talking about? |
Title: Re: Floor repair after leak Post by woodsmith on Dec 12th, 2016, 8:09am Yes it's the same mineral and you can get small bags this way, not sure if it's crushed into smaller granules for gardening use though. |
