Title: Noisy hot water!
Post by heaynr on Mar 7th, 2017, 12:30pm

Hello all - I really hope you're able to help a complete novice.

Our hot water seems to make a lot of noise when it comes on in the morning. Although the hot water cylinder is in a cupboard in our bedroom, so we expect to be able to hear it, it seems to have become much noisier and wakes us up without fail every morning. I supposed it's best described as a loud filling/water whoosing noise.

We wondered whether it's related to the water tank in the loft (which seems to fill loudly) and whether fitting a quieter float valve would help, replacing the existing part 1 valve? But this doesn't necessarily explain why it has seemingly got louder (or perhaps i've just got more tired?!)

Or is it likely an issue with the hot water cylinder itself? Not sure of it's age, but I understand that the colour of it's jacket (red) dates it.

Or is it something else entirely/a combination of things?

Thank you in advance!

I'm guessing it's a vented gravity feed system. First thing to check is the small supply tank, probably in the attic. Make sure it actually has water in it, sometimes they run dry because the ballvalve gets stuck..

If you can hear water running when the boiler comes on then you have air in the pipes, check the header tank in the loft has water in it.
