Title: EDF Meter Change
Post by Gammy_leg on Jul 17th, 2017, 4:33pm

Hi,

EDF suspect my electric meter is not working and want to come round to replace it.
Before they will arrange a visit they want proof that the recent re-wiring of the house is kosher.
I sent them copies the only two documents that I have, one being the NICEIC Building Regs Certificate of Compliance and the other being the NICEIC Certificate of Design, Installation and Commisioning of a Fire Detection & Alarm System.
Apparently this is not good enough. Any idea what else they might need?

Gammy

You should have an "Electrical Installation Completion Certificate" which will look very similar to the smoke alarm one you have.  The serial number of this certificate should be recorded on your Building Control Compliance certificate.

The electrician should be able to provide you with a copy.  I would generally provide a second copy for free as a one off.

Thanks Lectrician, I'll have a root round for it or contact the sparky if I can't find it.

My meter was originally installed for Economy 7 so it has 2 digital displays - one for standard rate & one for off peak ( plus a third to total-up the two) The E7 was set up by the previous owner who had storage rads

In April I changed my tariff from E7 to a fixed rate standard deal. I'd never once used the storage rads and had had gas central heating installed.

Up until April the off peak meter had registered 23kw/h consumption. After that date it has recorded 0kw/h.

EDF are saying that the off peak display should have recorded something which I agree, however the only things I have on overnight are a fridge/freezer which sucks up 0.18kw/h, a telly on standby which is about 0.05kw/h and a phone charger ~0.03kw/h. EDF estimate the off peak shortfall to be 345kw/h!!!

I read that the E7 meter timer is radio controlled by EDF to allow for adjustment when the clocks go forward / back. I'm wondering whether they have somehow disabled the clock altogether and now all usage is recorded as Standard rate.

Any ideas?

ps I'm single, out of the house at work all day, away most weekends, cook little and use washing machine once a week.

I would make the assumption that the night units have been accrued on the peak reading instead, as the clock didn't switch the tariff.

Most meters will display which tariff is being recorded - A little red flag or LED?  Do you have a teleswitch or timeclock external to the meter, or is it built into it?  Can you post a picture?  Or the meter model number?

I would tell them to go swivel.  It is their meter and it is up to them to control/maintain it.  If they keep hassling you then make a formal complaint to them and send it Recorded.  A pain in the butt, I agree, but until these companies start employing customer service agents who actually have a brain to use, it's all we can do.

If your fridge freezer consumes 180W and off peak is 7 hours per day(?) that works out at 180 * 7 = 1.26kWH a day. There have been about 100 days since mid April so that's 1.26 * 100 = 126kWH compared to the 345kWH that the energy company estimates is missing.
