Title: Roof tiles
Post by TrevorP on Jul 19th, 2017, 9:06am

Just cleaned guttering on single story extension, and noticed that most of the concrete tiles had a large amount of the coarse coating missing, showing areas of bear concrete.
My question is....is this ok as I thought that concrete was porous and worried that in time would leak through. Is there something I could perhaps spray on to water proof?

Did take a pic but kept getting "file to big" from album!

Any suggestions would be helpful.

As long as the tiles are sound I wouldn't worry, the coating is more decorative than water resistant. I photo would be good though if you can reduce the image size.

That doesn't look too bad, a bit unsightly but not a problem as such. Definitely don't coat or treat them with anything. Also these tiles are probably a lot more brittle than when they were new so you need to avoid walking on them if at all possible.

Oops already done that as cleaned moss of the ridge tiles. But see your point, will keep off  in future. Glad you think ok so will leave and forget.
Thanks for advise.

One of the down sides of concrete roof tiles is that they don't look as good as they age. Clay tiles are more expensive but tend to look better as they age.
