Title: Wiring a Two Gang Light Socket
Post by Newbie1975 on Jan 10th, 2018, 9:42am

Please help !

I live in a TW newbuild house and recently changed all the lights, sockets and switches.

Everything went well apart from one.

I have a double light which controls the light in the hall way and the light outside which is sensor controlled

The light for the hall way works with the new switch but the light outside doesnt

I've wired it up as below (I'm doing this from memory so apologies if anything is wrong or if my terminology is wrong !)

Switched Live (Black with Brown Sleeve) is wired to Com on LHS

Ive then put a small brown cable to link Com on LHS to Com on RHS

Two Neutrals (Blue?) are wired into a termination block

One of the Browns is wired to L1 on the LHS

Second Brown is wired to L1 on the RHS

Any ideas what Ive done wrong ?

The outside light doesnt work at all but the light in the hall (LHS) works perfectly.

You haven't had a reply so here is my opinion. I'm not an electrician just an electronics engineer. If in any doubt get someone in to look at it.

That sounds wrong. Typically power comes into the switch on a live (brown) wire, goes through the switch (when its on) and then heads off to the light on the switched live (blue sleeved brown). So you would only expect switched live to go to the light you want that switch to control eg not another switch.

I can't be certain but it looks like you have two cables:

1)
Brown
Black (sleeved brown)
Grey (sleeved blue)
Earth

2)
Brown
Blue
Earth

One of the Browns is probably a permanant live. I can't be sure which one (probably the one in cable 1?), this should be connected to the COM of both switches.

The other Brown is probably a switched live to one of the lights (connect to L1 left)

The Black (sleeved brown) is a switched live to the other light (connect to L1 right)

The Grey sleeved Blue and the Blue wire are both Neutrals (connect together in the terminal block).

The two earths should be connected to the screw in the metal back box (done) but there should also be a link from there to the earth screw on the face plate if that is metal. The link should be sleeved yellow and green. Check other face plates if you've just done them all.

Does the outside light work if you have the hallway light on?

Looks like the brown inch long link wire is in the wrong place to me.  Confirm the above, and we can then advise were it should go!
