electric supply to new garge
Apr 24th, 2004, 9:43pm

Hello

I'm having a new garge built on a plot of land I own away from my house. Iwould really like to have some power in the garge (couple of sockets, lighting etc) and was wondering how to go about this. Who do I approach? the electric board or do i get hold of a sparky.

Any advice much appreciated

Regards

M.A.N

first you need to talk to the REC (regional electricilty company)

ask them how much it will cost to have a supply put in there, what tests need to be done on the wiring, what earth system it will be, and any special requirements

also you need to check how much the price vaires with the supply size i would get 40A at least but I would get a larger supply if the cost isn't significan'tly different in case you wan't to use anything high power in this garage later

as for actual wiring i would use a small rcd cu running a 32A ring and a 6A lighting cuircuit if you have any incomeing pipes you shuold fit a main earth terminal connect the CU to it with 16mm and connect the pipes to it with 10mm (if it's pme/tnc-s you may need larger sizes than theese if it's tt a sparky with specilalist test equipment will need to install and test a rod)

part P ,ay be an issue but it shouldn't be too much of a problem as you are going to be having major dealings with building control anyway

The plot concerned was a bit of land i bought off the local council. It is in an altogether different location to where my house is and is big enough for a spaceous double garage only. Its is located on a normal road, so I'm assuming that to get electric to the meter there would not have to be too much work involved

Take 12V DC car battery, connect to inverter, get 240v AC.

Okay for limited load for limited time.

well done BA, i think ur idea has to be the best, you can get around 700W from a small generator, which would handle a couple of lights and equipment you might need (current usage dependant), unless you plan to use high powered garden equipment i think your be safe, failing that the next size generator isnt too expensive, but i think both would be cheaper than any fixed instalation.

go with a generator!  Grin

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.
Think I'll get in touch with the local electical company Wink find out the requirements and potential costs. Failing that the generator sounds like a decent idea.

Cheers

I would be looking at solar power charging 12v batteries for lighting with a generator for 240V when required.
