Underlay marks on quarry tiles?
May 29th, 2004, 1:11am

I have recently uncovered a quarry tile floor (red/cream & minton), but it has in recent years been carpeted with a black rubber underlay underneath.

The problem is that this has left marks on the tiles, & I'm looking for suggestions to remove them.

Have tried sugar soap, white spirit & other solvents, paint stripper - all to no avail.  I'm wondering about caustic soda as a last resort  - any Ideas?

I had a similar problem kesh. The upstars bedrooms had foam rubber backing. When they were lifted rubber was stuck to the lino. It had gone very dry & powdery. I didn't try to remove it til the carpets get changed. Shocked

Kesh, I'm assuming you have got as much off as possible with a window scraper, but have you tried a steam stripper? I would have thought it was a better bet than a solvent as it won't spread it about, worth a try if you have one.

Just an idea and probably wont work but try oven cleaner... its surprising what it can do, I have used it to clean up stains on fibre cement slates.

Thanks for replying, there is no underlay left, just the stain marks.  I hadn't considered either the steamer or oven cleaner - both sound like excellent suggestions Smiley.

I'll post back when I've given them a go.

Get another quarry tile and gently rub it over the surface once youve got the worst off. might need a bit of water but it should do the trick. orks with paint stains etc on brickwork

I have a similar problem - but with a timber staircase.

Sounds to me like you need the assistance of some seriously strong solvent.

I'd try something with a bit of carbon tetrochloride in it -Trade-Only stuff because Carbon Tet is a banned substance but it sure does shift the crap.

TT
