locks and handles
Jul 9th, 2004, 6:06pm

This may seem a rudimentary question, but with mortice locks, are the distances between the keyhole and hole for the handle's spindle always the same? Can you use any lock with any handle, or do you have to be more careful? ???
Thanks

Are you talking mortice sash locks or horizontal mortice locks? Sash locks have the keyhole below the handle and this is usually a standads size. Horizontal locks have the keyhole nearer to the centre of the door and thedistance from the spindle can vary depending on the length of the lock.

You may find some handles/lock spindles are metric and others imperial 5/16" or 8mm

thanks for your reply Jason Smiley
I am meaning sash mortices locks, where the handle/keyhole unit is fixed to the door either side of the lock
I also found out today that you need a horizontal mortice lock if your using knobs rather than handles so you dont scrape your fingers on the door lining. is the spindle the square rod that the handles fit onto? Smiley

Yes mr_spanton, The spindle is that square pin going through the door that the handles fit to so you can open them.
