Nov 2nd, 2004, 2:12pm

Hi, I need to repair some roofing felt which has split, is it possible to do this without removing the roof tiles ie. from the loft area? (no way am I getting on the roof of the house!)

short of tucking a strip of felt into the lap and secureing to either side of the rafters then the answer is no, besides a felt covering is nothing more than an emergency secondary barrier and many a roof has none.If you have water leaking then your concern should be with your roof covering and not the felt beneath it! The felt should be of little concern, though having the roof overhauled would give you peace of mind and is money well spent.
Funny this one.... I think it has come up half a dozen times in the last few months on one forum or another.

Regards

Robbo

Like Robbo said, although you could try a bitumen mastic to patch things up assuming the main roof doesn't leak.

30 years ago in South Africa they seemed to know nothing of roofing felt.
All roofs were either tiles or corrugated iron nailed on.
That was with torrential storms every day in the summer.
leaks only happened if the hail was so hard it broke the tiles.
