Removing plaster from brickwork
Sep 14th, 2004, 2:11pm

Hi All
i need to remove some old plaster from interior brickwork - i have tried doing this with a hammer and chisel but some of it is very stubborn - i have also tried using a percussion drill without  a great deal more success.  Can this be removed with acid?  any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
thanks

Hi you say you have used a percussion drill, do you mean an SDS drill?

I would have thought your best bet is an SDS drill with rotary stop, fitted with a wide blade chisel; works for me, and you could easily hire one.

LSD is absolutely no use in removing plaster 8)

Try an angle grinder with a wire cup brush.  It will create an absolutely spectacular amount of dust, so you will need to use a good respirator.  Also the wire twists tend to fly out of the cup brush, so you ought to use a full face shield not just safety glasses - you will end up with a beard like Desperate Dan otherwise!

Get down to your local tool-hire shop and hire a 4KG SDS hammer drill complete with 40mm SDS chisel bit.
Plaster'll be off in half a day depending on the size of area you have to do.

I wasted a whole afternoon trying to do it with a 4lb hammer and bolster chisel and only managed to remove around 1 square metre.
Thought sod this and bought a big BOSCH SDS hammer drill for a ton off the local market.

I cleared every wall in the room in just one day. The longest job was bagging up the waste afterwards.

Thats the trouble with a colostomy - you can never find the shoes to match the bag.......

If the backgroud really IS brick, then it's most likely been plastered in Bonding Coat.  This stuff sticks like the proverbial sh*t to a wotsit.

The only thing you can do is use heavy equipment as TT says.  We have a selection of breakers (SDS Plus) all with variable wack on them.  It's not always easy to get the right tool straight away but the most important part is a   W I D E  chisel.  We use 75mm and 100mm and these do the job.

It's still hard work though, that Bonding is good stuff.
