Ceiling Cracks
Feb 7th, 2005, 12:03pm

Many of our ceilings are showing cracks at the pb joints.

I suspect the original 'plasterer' didn't tape the joints (I
haven't hacked off any skim to find out though).

Is this likely?  Seems crazy to me to omit the 2 minute job
to do the whole thing properly - but then it wouldn't be the
first time.

Any suggestions what do do?  I've tried forcing caulking into
the cracks,  but I'm not convinced I'll be able to finish this
to a high (invisible) standard.  or indeed if the cracks will reappear.

I've wondered about taping the joints and then skiming
just thick enough to cover the mesh.  What do you think?

... and please please  don't use the word 'artex' in reply!!

Cheers!

Ian hopefully a plasterer will come along at some point but I would avoid using caulk I am sure it will show.

Same with patching the joins when light shines across the joins it will look like a street plan.

I had a similar problem, I think it was caused by movement of the timber in the loft with changes in humidity. I solved it in the end by papering the ceiling with a blown vinyl type wallpaper, because the paper is very strong it makes it pretty easy to put up too.

When I've had to deal with this type of problem the only choices were either 'tape and re-skim' (re-plaster the whole ceiling) or as woodsmith says, blown vinyl papering.

The papering is a bullet proof method imho and there are lots of styles available.  There is a smooth lining paper made which is 'elastic' (slightly) so may be useful for curing a recurring cracking problem.

Cracks in ceilings look awful and can be difficult to stop recurring on a smooth plastered ceiling, expecially if the loft is used a lot and is overloaded with junk.
