Hi John
Kitchen companies, even those charging 40,000+, only prime what can be seen. However it is better practice to prime all 6 sides of a piece of timber from a stability point of view. I spend my life telling kitchen manufacturers that sink units, dishwasher housings, tumble drier housings, units round cookers etc. should be primed on all sides because of the moisture.
So in answer to the question, yes you can get away with one coat IMHO, I would just prime them with a coat of oil or shellac based primer.

Hi Paintycait

I posted this in the chippy section - maybe you can help?

- I'm painting some ply kitchen units before assembling them. As the external sides won't be seen where the units butt up to each other, can I get away with painting one coat on the unseen surface to stabalise the ply or should I paint both surfaces with the same number of coats ?

Not quite sure what the point of this thread is...since you already know, but this is one of my fields so I'll jump in. We paint on average, about 2 fitted cabinetry jobs a month, most of them kitchens but some bedrooms and bathrooms too. Some are raw wood, some are preprimed, some repaints of old painted and some painting over finished timber...some plain paint some fauxed.
I've painted tiles too, but never recommend it as a long term solution, given that most of tiles we are asked to paint sit behind an Aga or are in a "wet" situation.

Sooo...whatcha wanna know?

dont think i have welcomed yet  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin welcome

i think the idea is
we had a few more areas that were  little used and the consensus was to merge and reduce the number

what you have to remember is with the equivilent trade sections there are twice as many as you see

its just trying to keep it neat and tidy [/quote]yes I can understand.  maybe one day it will be popular er  er er. lol
