Gloss and emulsion: which order?
Feb 13th, 2006, 2:18pm

Hi,

I've got a room needing emulsion on the walls and gloss on the skirting boards, window frames, etc.

What's the best order to paint - gloss on woodwork first followed by emulsion, or vice versa?

I'm not an expert, but I'd say emulsion - so you don't get roller spashes all over your woodwork.  You can then leave the accurate cutting-in until when you gloss, when you'll be using smaller brushes.

I always thot emulsion then gloss but see a lot of painters gloss first because they say you can wipe emulsion of the gloss easier than gloss of the emulsion Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I recently had a load of decorating work done by a 'proper' decorating firm and the emulsion was all done first.

The last job was glossing the doors/architraves/skirtings and window boards.

It's easier to wash emulsion off gloss than the other way around - so I'd do the gloss first.

However don't be tempted to slap the gloss all over the place on the basis that you can cover it up with the emulsion. I've seen the oil in gloss bleed through emulsion somehow.

Mind you, gloss is a bit old hat nowdays, have you not thought of using eggshell or satin finish?

What goes round, comes round; as soon as one of those ponces on the television use a bit of woodchip in one of their creations, then the sheep will be wanting it on their walls.

Woodchip to me, is like varnish to Wolfie.  Angry

i tend to decorate in the following order

missthekid gets the gloss and sets to work

i grab the biggest roller i can find and get to emulsioning(one coat stuff obviously)

i stop for coffee after about 5 minutes or so.

finish the emulsion of the room about the same time as missthekid finishes the window frame.

throw wet roller into sink

make more coffee and watch telly(or come on here)

go back in the room about 2 hours later and point out the missed bits to missthekid

duck the paintbrush

go to bed
