what type of timber for a duck house?
Jul 23rd, 2009, 12:41pm

Hi

i want to build a duck house and im not sure what type of timber to use, should it be tanalised.. etc??

I have read that tanalised timber is not recommended for animals in case they chew at it!!

I wanted to make a rectangle using 2"x2" and then tongue and grove the exterior dose this sound like the best approach?

Thanks

Rob

Is this a floating duck house as per the Tory one which we all paid for, or on dry land a-la chicken house?

Would DUCKS chew the woodwork?

If not, then the pressure-treated stuff is always going to be the best option, unless you're loaded, in which case go for oak.

Fire up google images for designs and dimensions. Seems important to get the base off the ground. Some are made from WBP with planked roofs. Most seem a bit bigger than you propose eg more like 3'x3'. There are bound to be plans, free or otherwise out there.

Thanks for thr replys. The house is to be on land, you are right i have looked on the internet and have changed my design to 3"x2", they wount chew it but it was the cost that got me 6 x 4.8mtr lengths of tanalised  shiplap was £60 dose this seem right? is there a slightly cheeper option? i wanted shiplap or tounge and grove.

Feather-edge from B&Q, pressure-treated, well priced. Looks nicely rustic. Galvanised nails. Last forever.

They also do some notched posts for arrised rails, which could make construction easier/neater if you want the floor raised.

I hope you mean 3' x 2' Grin

you should be able to get 5" treated txg ship lap for around £1.20-£1.50 a metre

6" is proportinatly expensive as in the extra 20% costs around 40% more

Ask for their best price. Some builders merchants have stupid list prices. I recently bought some timber at £1.4/meter and the list was >£4

Try Wickes if you have one near you. B&Q is also good for timber, as Joiner mentioned.
