Lining paper shrinkage
Jun 4th, 2011, 11:08pm

Just moved to new house and in need of decorating, I have noticed that several walls hav lining paper (horizontal) there appears to be some shrinkage between some sheets. Whats the best way to fill this in prior to painting?
The gap is no more than a mm, would the paint fill it?

I know Hammy will probably moan, but my decorator uses a fine filler, and a good filling knife, one strike and its gone... let dry , check and paint!!

Use a plasterboard jointing paste for the fine filler (it comes in a huge tub & will last you about 129 years!), will fill smooth and dry quick.

I think the stuff I have is Gyproc, came from plasterboard section of BNQ, cost about £10, needs occassional stirring but will last my lifetime!

A light filler coat, make sure you spread well and buff well, you should be good to go.

Lining paper is hung horizontally before hanging wallpaper so the joints have no chance of falling in the same place. It also equalises the stresses.

Even if you are going to paint it, it is sometimes quicker to hang horizontally than vertically.
