Personally, I'd remove the door and strip it with a caustic soda mix to remove all traces of the varnish. Would do the job in an hour, tops.
There are a lot of proprietary paint and varnish removers on the market, but in my experience they all take time and make more mess than the job's worth. Caustic soda is cheap (available from places like B&Q, in the decorating aisle) and easy to use, but you MUST wear protective clothing, including goggles and rubber gloves.
Follow the instructions on the packaging to the letter, apply (using a non-organic bristled brush), leave for a short while and then wash off.
The other advantage of using caustic soda is that the wetting of the door raises its grain which, when sanded down (using wire-wool), makes for a very smooth finish.
