Ceiling problem
Mar 28th, 2012, 2:37pm

Plaster cracked along edge of bedroom ceiling board, 60`s built house.
Please recommend best practice method to fill and what to use for a smooth finish prior to applying emulsion finish.
Should I nail along edge of board into joist before filling in crack.
Thank you

is it just a hairline crack or has it opened up?  is the plasterboard still secure?

Being a 60's home i very much doubt the boards are even plaster boards (gypsum) , they are probably grey if you scored them,

now DO NOT NAIL, use plaster board screws, FOR TIMBER,(coarse thread)  and not the fine threaded ones, these are for plaster board to the metal stud/ lathes....

once the boards are more secure, apply a flexible caulking, once dry use a POLYCELL 3 in 1 Base coat (and wait for it to dry fully)

now apply both coats of the emulsion!!! (don't skimp, 2 coats for a proper job!!!)

Thanks Timba-Wolf for advice.

When applying flexible caulking to fill gap I need to ensure a smooth finish. I normally would use edge of credit card  to achieve this.
Do I need to prepare crack prior to caulking.
Thanks again

IF you use a decent brand, and the crack is no wider than say 5-6 mm then just making sure the caulking is well pushed home,  if at least 4-5mm wide, apply 2 layers/runs, allowing the first about an hour to cure:

Ceiling could cause several problems such as moisture which further result in paint failure. When there is improper insulated attic it can trap moisture between the insulation and the ceiling which migrate it into the ceiling and paint is failed finally.
