long runing script
Jul 7th, 2013, 9:04am

When I visit Ask the Trades or change page it frequently stops responding for say 10-15 seconds. Explorer reports that it's due to a long running script.

Not really a big problem but curious what the long running script is doing?

I also get a message asking if I want to allow the site access to my clipboard. It doesn't make a difference if I say no.

Any chance the forum has been infected?

Wolfie has reported the same problem.

A couple of replies from Lec.

Re: issue with the forum??

There is an issue with an update to Windows IE, this seems to happen on a lot of forums at the moment, many folk have mentioned it on other sites, and I was waiting for someone to ask here too!

I use google chrome - so much quicker than IE.

I expect MS will release a fix as part of their next update, but they will never admit there was a problem!

If it happens again, check to see if the Facebook "Ask The Trades" "like" link is showing, or the Paypals "Donate" link, both between the menu and the forums pages.  These are the only two pieces of scripted embedded code in the forum that run without interaction.  If they run for longer than they should, they should just time out and not appear, not stop the forum working.

It does look like it is the FBook plugin causing the issue - I have tried using IE, and it does seem to take longer for the FB plugin to appear in IE than other browsers all of a sudden.

I will have a dig.

I have removed the FB like button for now - it seems there is a known issue:  http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17479247/facebook-like-button-box-causing-sto...

All browsers interpret code differently, so something FB have recently changed is working in some browsers and not others.

I tried in IE10, and had the script error immediately.  I have disabled the plug in (not removed it) and will put it back when FB pull their finger out.

Should only ask that when posting?

It is the forum storing your post on the clipboard. Should there be an error while posting, it can be retrieved.

I thought there was a check box when posting that said "copy post to clipboard", but think perhaps that was a previous version.  Could implement it.

IE is the only browser to warn when a site tries to put stuff on your clipboard.

Will look to add the checkbox (if it's not there) when home. On hols at the moment.

Just posting using IE10 - The forum detects you are using an IE browser, and as it knows you are, it adds the check box "Enable auto-copy Message" which by default is ticked.

Would you prefer this to be un-ticked as default?  I could alter it so that if you un-tick it, it will remember this individually per user for the next time you post.

Done.

It should be off as default for everyone with IE, but you can tick the box to copy the post to the clipboard if you like, and the setting will be stored for the next time you post.
