Build dormer window into existing mid terrace home

Hi.
I am considering putting a dormer window into an attic bedroom.
The property is about 4 to 5m wide 1890s (ish) mid terrace with poor condition slate roof.
When the roof is being replaced I am considering putting in a 1m wide pitched roof dormer.
Can anyone advice me on this matter particularly at this moment any picture based tutorials showing the building and installation of a dormer that would be acceptable to England/Wales planning and building regs.
Any and all advice is welcome and BTW I do realise that a rooflight would give me more light and be cheaper and easier to fit but I am having/wishing/needing to satisfy "er indoors" of two generations so I do not have a final say on the matter !!!
