Blocking chimney
Mar 19th, 2015, 6:34pm

Hello, glad to see this quiet corner of the internet is still here.

I have a 1995ish built house and im doing away with the gas fire in lounge.  I want to ideally block it at the bottom with celotex then dot and dab it and plaster it including the chimney breast.  I have a photo of up the chimney and it has the terra-cotta flue type thing.  Does it have to have a vent at the bottom?

One thing of note, IF and thats a big if I stay in this house I may get a log burner in the future so dont want to balls up a useable (if it is suitable for use) flue.

cheers for any help.

yes the flue should be vented at the bottom, could be an external vent (air brick)

update.

Put  air brick in the outside just above where it had been blocked, below where the liner started so its undamaged.  Managed to scavenge a sheet of 100mm celotex from the builders at work and hammered a piece of that up there and then gripfilled all way round before dot and dabbing so should be airtight.  all plastered now and painted.

All that sound ok? Im half tempted not to fix the air brick in as i can reach in there an feel the top of the celotex for moisture periodically.

Rooms seems a bit bigger without the fire place and harth (spelling).  May put a picture up as im proud of it!
