RCD tripping

HELP

I have an intermittent electrical fault in my house that trips the RCD. We have gone through weeks of this now and every time it goes we eliminate another electrical item that was plugged in before.
So that's problem number one. I've run out of appliances and plugs to eliminate.

On Tuesday we had an electrician come out to look at it. He spent ten minutes here tested the RCD said unless it goes when he's here he hadn't got a clue, then charged us 15 quid for the privilege!!!

From then I've started keeping a diary - Tuesday it tripped at 12.30 then 19.50 three times in a row. Then was fine until Wednesday at 13:00 it tripped again once. Then Thursday at 11:45 four times in a row and again at 17:40 twice.

The only pattern the diary is showing is the time of day that it trips.

Note: My PC has been known to turn itself on from time to time with nothing going near it.

Any help that's better than 'haven't got a fecking clue mate, that will be 15 quid' would be much appreciated

You need an electrician who knows how to use an insulation test meter (often known as a Megger). All electricians should have one, but not all can use them properly!

It is likely damp or grime on the fixed wiring somewhere, or an outside light, socket etc.

Is the RCD protecting the whole installation, or just a handful of circuits?
