Do you think this would be accepted?

I'd like to do away with the old Purlin supports and put steel in instead.
I have attached two drawings - Would someone have a look and give an opinion?

Many Thanks

This job will definitely need Building Control approval and they will need a structural engineers report before they agree to anything, so the first thing I would do is get a structural engineer to look at it. It is worth bearing in mind that the loading on purlins is not just vertically down, it can be down and inward, which is logical, but with certain roof designs the loading can be down and outward. Either way I think that if you provided just a vertical support you would need to tie the two opposing purlins together with a sizeable brace.

I left it for a while to see if anyone else would comment.
I'll get an Architect to look at the structure - If my idea is possible, it will give me another metre or so width on the loft conversion, so worth the question....
Thanks for the info Woodsmith - Appreciate it Smiley

Not sure that an architect could help you, they normally pass this sort of problem to a structural engineer. I've just done something very similar myself where I had to remove a large brace between two enormous purlins as it was at head height and we needed to move it up out of the way. I've ended up making a king post truss out of oak, I hope you get a easier solution.
