Question about 4 way extension into travel adaptor
Mar 21st, 2017, 6:13pm

Hi,

At the moment I have a travel adaptor from a UK plug to 2 a pin flat Japanese plug, which is max 10Amp.  If I have just a normal UK 4 way socket / extension which is 13Amp, can that be still used through the travel adaptor?

The only four devices that will be plugged into the extension / adaptor are actually quite low powered (one laptop, one netbook, and two other devices on charge like 2 phones / tablet & phone), the laptop which is the most powerful is something like 65w, which I think at Japan's 110v will draw less than 1Amp.  So as all 4 devices will be well under the 10Amp limit, I'm guessing having a 13Amp extension plugged in won't be an issue?

Sorry if it seems like a basic / silly question, but I just want to be sure it's ok.  Thanks in advance.

(the adaptor is a normal adaptor, don't need a voltage converter as the laptop and netbook have 110v switchable on the adaptors)

It would be fine.  The best way would be to use a 4 way adaptor with a fuse, and fit a 10amp fuse.  Belts and braces.

Just keep the total load below the "weakest link" which is the 10A adaptor.

Just for info not all UK extension leads are rated at 13A even though they use a "13A" plug and several "13A" sockets. Some have a lower rating marked on them somewhere.

some of them are marked 13A but would probably only be safe for 3A  Grin
