Mirror demistifier - Help
Mar 30th, 2017, 9:30pm

Hi
Within our bathroom installation we asked the builder for a mirror with a demister pad.  We purchased the mirror and two demister pads and left them to be connected.  Our builder has just informed us 4 days from completion that the demister pads can't be connected.  He says that the wire loop that he has left terminated above the sink in the bathroom is on a permanent live.  Does anyone know any options as to what we can do?  Can we use the demister pads?  Can we terminate the wire and leave it behind the mirror?  Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

Has the electrician said this?  Surely he can swap it to a switched live - If he can't, it's poorly designed and installed wiring.

The perm live could be switched using an additional switch which can be added by chasing the wall behind the mirror before it is fitted.  You could use a behind tile switch, and could even fit this behind the mirror.  Wave your hand to turn on/off.

Is there no loft above?

Sounds like he was expecting the mirror to have a switch on it?

+1 to the hidden switch although it would be nice to have some indication if it's on or off. Is there an LED on the tile demister? Probably not.

If the wire goes up into the roof space it might be possible to avoid chasing out the walls for a new switch by using some sort of remote switch or putting a timer up there. However I think the regulations may require any switch to be accessible in an emergency. Perhaps a pull cord with neon indicator?

You could just terminate the wire behind the mirror and not use the demister but this needs to be done properly. I wouldn't really be comfortable with the ends of the wire just wrapped in tape. Some sort of recessed junction box?

Or even better, use a switch and receiver from Quinetic.  Look no wires !
