Pipes banging when nothing being used
Nov 19th, 2017, 8:58am

Hi all, staying round in laws and noticed bad pipe banging every 15-20mins, during night when nothing is being used.
Have found couple of pipes almost touching and separated, but still banging somewhere. They do have what I would think high pressure supply, so wondered if by closing stop cock slightly this would help?
They are reluctant for me to do this as it could affect the shower pressure which is pretty good.
Any ideas as it’s stumped me.
TP

Going to need a lot more information.

Whats sound banging.

Like a knock, click, tapping.

ais the bang regular

ANy idea where it may be from/location.

is it a one off bang constant or several.

Historically was something in use prior to the bang, heating on/off, hot water being used, for example

As much information

Joking is it connected to that planet that's going to destroy the earth today

Every 15-20 mins could be the central heating firing up/shutting off. Could it be heating pipes expanding/contracting?

Going to be something like that CW.

Maybe no water in the header tank ? could be virtually anything at the moment

Thanks for replies, it sounds like pipes banging together, have found two in boiler area, and separated, but still it happens.
Def not CH as this happens throughout the night when nothing at all is being used.
Have managed to turn stop cock, which was fully opened, and closed to within one turn open, just to see if this helps, will have to wait a bit to see if any success.
Will keep you posted.
Thanks again

Just to add
It is a one off bang, and does not do it when boiler fires up, or taps turned on, or toilet flushed.
Stumped me!

Shutting the stopcock won't reduce the pressure. Turning the stopcock right off, before you get to bed, maybe an idea to see whether it still bangs.

Is the bang regular, more or less the same time
