Title: False Wall to Mount TV in Wall [New Build]
Post by Neil (Scotland) on Apr 5th, 2010, 7:46pm

Hi there,

I'm moving into my new property in June - and I would like to mount my 40" TV "in" the wall.

It is a new build, and standard plaster board walls. I had thought about cutting out (not me personally) the plasterboard and mounting the tv inside (therefore would be using the outside wall to secure the bracket). I'm not sure if there are any permissions i would need to do this (given I'd need to take away some of the studs from the wall) - and also because this is an end wall of the house).

The most likely option would be to build a false wall (which would allow me to have storage built in also for AV equipment).

The TV including Bracket has a depth of 6.25 inches.

Although I'm thinking to take into account the TV and AV equipment - i should build false wall so the face of the new wall is 1.25ft from original wall.

My questions are as follows:

1. Do I need any permission to do this? (Central Scotland)
2. How much can I expect to pay for this - finished (E.g. Plaster and Plug socket moved 'within' AV space).
3. Are there any other solutions that i don't know about?

Many thanks for any help you can give and apologies for my ignorance towards the subject.

thanks,
Neil

I would personally be happy with the TV just on the wall, however, if you wanted to 'flush' it in I would think the way to go would be to bring the wall out, creating an alcove that can be either plastered or lined with timber, similar to a window reveal.

A stud wall such as this would cost a few hundred quid I guess, and the lecky side of it around £100 or less - I would expect it is just adding a couple double sockets.  The cables from the TV could be dropped in behind the false wall to your AV kit, including the TV mains lead.  Having the bottom cill of the reveal removeable would facilitate this, or drop a length of gutter down pipe in.

Taking a foot or so off a room to flush your AV kit in seems excessive though, unless the room is huge.

You would want to consider ventilation for the AV kit - sky+ boxes in particular do not like the heat of cupboards - they generate heat themself and the cupboards get very hot, leading to the boxes locking up etc.  Make sure there are ventilation holes somewhere in the final design of your cupboard.

The reveal for the TV may also need consideration with regard heat - What does the manual on your TV say with regard distance from walls and ceilings?  Usually they state it must be no closer than 100mm or so from the ceiling or walls, which in this case would be the insides of your reveal.

Adding a false wall like this does not need any planning control, and is not likely to require building control either.

If this is an outside wall that would be a mistake. The outside leaf will be cold. Convection currents set up by the warm TV could well drag lots of humid air from the room up behind the TV leading to condensation on the now cold wall. Cutting the plasterboard would also mean puncturing the vapour barrier potentially allowing humid air into the timber frame. Also a no no.
