This is a job that I haven't actually done before, so thoughts are welcome.

I've been asked to cut some paving slabs. These are the regular sort of slabs you find in an average garden, nothing fancy. I believe these might be sandstone variety.

I've got a small 4.5in grinder, but I think I'll get me a 9in grinder instead, as I presume the extra depth might be required.

1st question is - what type of grinding wheel do I need?

2nd question is - I know about eye protection etc, but are there any special precautions I need to take when using a grinding wheel? I'm presuming that I just fire it up and cut along a line on the paving slab.

Get a diamond blade, it will work out cheaper in the long run.

Make sure the blade is the correct way round, and if not using diamond the correct speed and material type. Best to wear, protective glasses, dust mask, steel toe caps.

Place the slab in sand and stand to the side of the cut, depending on material you shouldn't need to cut right through.

Last time I cut paving slabs I wanted to cut them down the middle for a lawn edging.
I used a circular saw with stone cutting disk. I made a jig from ply & offcuts to provide a guide. I then cut every slab perfectly in half. The neighbours soon complained because of the cloud of dust. It looked like the sahara here. ;)
I decided that next time I would only do it when the wind was in the right direction.

That sounds like a brilliant idea Dewy! I might go with that option.

Presumably a vacuum hose connected to the saw could make a difference.
