When my Dad died last year I inherited his old deWalt planer/thicknesser which is out of production now, but is similar to the DW1150. On the side it has a horizontal table which can be moved left and right, and in and out by means of levers, and can be moved up and down using a thumbwheel. It is marked DW600 and I understand it's a horizontal mortising attachment. It was all pretty well gunged up and starting to rust so I stripped it down and got it all cleaned up and adjusted and it moves a treat, but I don't have the mortising bit.

There's no fitment for the hollow square chisel which you get in a vertical mortiser, just a 1/2" socket on the end of the planer drum with a grub screw to hold a bit. I assume that you need a cutting bit similar to a routing bit. I couldn't find a suitable bit anywhere, so I thought I would be clever and get a 1/2" router bit and use that. It fitted fine, but just wouldn't cut. When I stopped the machine to check it was quickly obvious why - the shaft was rotating in the wrong bloody direction!

So - does anyone know where I can get a 1/2" horizontal mortising bit, preferably without spending a fortune? Second hand would be good, if anyone's got one lying around, as I'm not going to be giving it a huge amount of use.

Quite a lot of combi machines have the option of a slot morticer, but most have a chuck that fits onto the end of the planer block, you may be lucky to pick up a 1/2" one. I've go one laying around somewhere but its only 8 or 10mm so you would need a bush of some sort.

Scheppach, kity and I think record all have slot morticers so try them www.nmauk.co

Thanks Dewy, just checked NMA site but can't find any scheppach slot morticers.

Looked at my kity catalogues and all their bits are 10mm shank either straight flute or "helicoidal" in left and right hand forms depending on what machine it is for, just got to find someone with one on the shelf and turn up a bush, thats when it comes in handy having my own metal turning lathe.

It's the same with Kity products.
NMA have been the agents since Kity went into liquidation yet they are not on their website.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. A chuck to fit in the 1/2" socket would be an attractive option, but i would still need a reverse-cutting bit to do any work with it. I will give nmauk a try, but i would I think the Sheppach chuck has a taper fitting. I guess I shall have to pester the local specialist tool stores some more and see if I can get a suitable 1/2" cutter.

The Kity chucks fit onto a threaded spigot not a taper, may be a special chuck with a non standard thread as the load is being applied in the oposite direction to normal.

Are you sure it's 1/2" and not 12mm, even though its an old machine it was made in europe so could be metric or maybe even a morse taper?

Well, the shank of a 1/2" router bit fits easily and, if anything, is a little loose, so I would say definitely not 12 mm. I can't say definitively that it's not a taper, but if it is, it's the first one I've ever seen with a grub screw.

Found these cutters on Wealdens site, bit pricy, I use the righthand version for joining worktops etc.

the cutters have a 13mm shank ,hope this helps.
