Title: UPVC Patio Door Lock
Post by Mikee on Aug 27th, 2010, 9:20pm

I need to fit a small lock to my upvc, sliding patio doors, (the push in type) but the edge of the door where it has to be fitted is recessed and covered with a thin upvc strip so there is hardly any depth for the screws to hold. Can anyone tell me the best way to fix it to satisfy my Insurers.
                  Cheers Mikee. ::)

Not enough information Mike!

Google "upvc patio door locks" and see if you can find a situation close to yours, because without actually seeing the door and the type of lock no one is going to know what to advise.

Virtually all the upvc patio door locks I've ever known have been easy to fit, so I can't understand what your problem is. Sorry.

Thanks for your replies, hope these pics help. The door has a five point lock but Insurers want a slide lock as well.

That system's unknown to me. I haven't the remotest idea how you'd fit that particular type of lock to that design of door.

Retro fitting security to upvc stuff is problematic at the best of times because of the thin section, and even worse now that reinforcing is no longer a standard spec (which gave you something to screw into).

You need someone familiar with that upvc system who'll know where you can fix to.

This sort of thing demonstrates the total ignorance of the insurance companies regarding the laughable "security" of patio doors (or French windows, come to that) because you can break into the things regardless of how many locks you have fitted, unless glazed with laminated units, without making hardly a sound. Toughened glass shatters into thousands of tiny pieces that hit the ground with no more sound than slush sliding off a roof. All you need is a little "fire escape" hammer and it's job done. But at least the security locks will still be in place. Bit like a chocolate fireguard for all the benefit they bring.
