Help please. We are about to replace our kitchen units. Talking to a potential supplier installer (as recommended by friends) today we asked about a wooden worktop. He sucked in his breath and claimed he had only fitted a handful preferring to use Granite or Laminated worktops due to the movement that occurs with solid wooden ones. We have not had wooden worktops but have two free standing tables in the kitchen that show none of the problems he has suggested.

Any advice gratefully received.

You can get movement in solid tops but, with correct fitting, this should only be a problem at corner joints. No matter what you do there will always be movement at this joint and so you have to design it in to prevent it showing too much. Or avoid having a corner joint if at all possible.

Don't know where the supplier's coming from on this one. Even the joints can be stabilised with a biscuit joint and fixing bolts.

You then have to ensure that the worktop is sealed properly, and any one of the proprietary types will do that - remembering always to keep the treatment refreshed at regular intervals, especially if the draining board is grooved into the worktop surface.
