Title: stripping doors
Post by Natedog on Feb 2nd, 2012, 5:44pm

most of the original doors in our house had been replaced with nasty cheap flat ones.  i've got a chippy coming in a few weeks to replace them with 4 panel wooden ones.  the 3 original doors we'd like to retain, but they are painted and wallpapered (just the panels on the back) and ideally they'd be stripped and then waxed to match.  what's the most effective way of removing the paint from the fiddly mouldings round the edge of the panels without damaging the wood underneath?

Something like this...

There are other similar products out there.

But I'm a tight b'stard so I would use caustic soda, observing all the usual precautions for personal safety and following to the letter the instructions on the packaging. It's available from B&Q and other large DIY outlets, usually in the decorating aisles.

Caustic soda...horrible stuff...then you have to faff about neutralising it.

For stripping a door firstly there is need of heat gun and after that liquid stripper is used. When paint on the door is stripped then use a palm sander. There is also need of paper to remove the flecks of remaining paint. It would fill up all the wholes in the metal or wood of the door.

i found an easier method.  i just repainted them while she was away for a weekend.  4 panels done the same colour as the walls and the rest of the door done in cream (she hates white gloss, which is why she wanted them stripped) then a quick coat of black satin spray blown over the door catch

That's saved a load of work and looks great.

Have these been officially approved by "she who was away"?  ;D
