Title: painting a handrail Post by Natedog on Mar 15th, 2013, 2:59pm i painted the handrail on the stairs last autumn using valspar (?sp) water based gloss. it got a coat of undercoat and then 2 coats of colour. the paint has already rubbed through in places. is there any way of stopping this happening so fast? i wondered if adding a shaped handrail to the top of what's there (currently just a 6x1 on end) to remove the sharp corners from it? somthing like this http://www.wickes.co.uk/content/ebiz/wickes/invt/546668/Modern-Deck-Handrail-2-4m_large.jpg |
Title: Re: painting a handrail Post by woodsmith on Mar 15th, 2013, 4:08pm That paint has worn pretty quickly, some water based paints are very soft but how about a plan B? You could cap it with a similar moulding in oak and then give it a couple of coats of Polyx oil, rather than paint it. |

Title: Re: painting a handrail Post by Natedog on Mar 28th, 2013, 4:28pm she got me a book :o most of the jobs are pain in the bum little finishing off bits that i don't have the patience for. some are a bit more major though, like our bedroom ceiling that has started falling down. personally i don't see what the urgency is - the dodgy bit is above her side of th bed, not mine ;D |

I agree that's a much better idea. But just out of curiosity... How many do you have in your place? If kids are involved you'd be surprised how quickly things like this can wear away! |

Title: Re: painting a handrail Post by big_all on Dec 28th, 2014, 8:31pm certainly different just make sure the handrail is a minimum 900mm[ i think it is] above the nose off the stairs to comply with regs also make sure a 100mm sphere wont pass through any gap this includes pushing the rope into the air or away from the edge |
