Title: Extractor fan vent
Post by PJM on Apr 22nd, 2013, 2:11pm

Hi All, First post so please be gentle  [smiley=wave.gif]

I need to move an extractor fan outlet from a cloakroom to install a conservatory. The outlet needs to move horizontally about 2 meters, current installation comprises a flexible pvc circular tube and I am thinking of running a flexible rectangular tube through the cavity wall to meet the curent outlet.

Question is will I get access through the cavity to fit the tube?
Any hints on how to achieve this?

House is approximately 6 years old and I think the cavity has loose fill insulation.

If the house is only 6 years old, I would think the cavity would have some rigid insulation board up against the internal skin, leaving only around an inch on space.

Can you take some photos of what you have?

Can you not use some of the flat rigid duct and bring the wall out to conceal it?  (stud off the wall in the conservatory?).

Red section in the top picture shows the existing run through to the external wall, the trunking runs in the ceiling void and the floor above has ceramic tiles.

The second picture just shows the back of the house

A bit tricky to tell to be honest.  Going in the cavity is not really going to be successful.

The plan shows a garage?  Can you not relocate the fan in the WC, ducting it into the garage, and around the inside garage wall?

Either with flat duct or round 100mm duct.  You can get duct clips to secure it to the wall, both is flat and round.

The garage has a pink plasterboard ceiling and is the only internal wall that is built from breeze block so I assume piercing the wall to vent the loo would compromise the fire resistance.

I think I shall have to bite the bullet and lift the flooring above the vent and run the trunking above the garage ceiling to the front of the house.

Thanks for the reply, great forum,

If you went through into the garage, to maintain the fire proofing, you would use something like this:

That certainly looks like an easier option, thanks again.

just re-routed an extractor for a country club as part of a larger project,

just a case of rerouting the new ducting as Lec states, fan, round to square adator ,(rectangular as such) ,fire cuff  new flat ducting, and out,via another square to round adaptor (or even just leave in rectangular if wanted)

went about the same distance as across your garage and spent less than £100 on new ducting materials...

oh, and the ducting sold in Toolstation is self extinguishing... to boot!!

Looks like a trip to tool station then, cheers  :)
