Title: Connection advise please 1ph 240v Motor Starter
Post by quintain1 on Oct 1st, 2013, 5:57pm

Hi
I need your advice and would welcome help on where to connect incoming and outgoing supply to a Tend TEW16 DOL Motor Starter for my 2.5HP single phase woodsaw motor.
I have checked previous advice on this forum and elsewhere but am still not certain.

My google research "seems" to tell me that incoming & outgoing feed should connect to:
L1-Live
L2-Neutral
(other advise tells me Neutral to L3 and / or 13NO)
Supply to motor should be:
T1-Live
T3-Neutral
(other advise tells me Neutral to 14NO)

I attach 2 x pics which I hope will help.
Also if the pictures are not clear I give the following info' about the motor starter terminals.

L1 is strapped to A1 being immediately above/below each other.
L3 is strapped to 13NO.
13NO is also connected to green "ON" button.
A2 immediately below 13NO has an unused wire from it. (another terminal A2 is immediately below 14NO)
a terminal on the green "ON" button is strapped to a terminal on the red "OFF" button and a lead from that terminal connects to 14NO.
The second terminal on the "OFF" button has an unused wire from it.

I hope I haven't bogged you down with to much information.

Have you got the overload for this too, which fits on the bottom?

Live to top L1, neutral to top L3.  The two bare ways at bottom go via the overloads n/c terminals, or joined together if you're not going to use an overload.

Motor then goes to bottom T3 (neutral), bottom T2 (live), with a link of wire from bottom T1 to top L2.

Hi and thank you lectrician.

Is an overload advisable, if so I will get one.

The overload protects your motor. It needs to be selected according to the FLC (full load current) of the motor, which will be printed on the rating plate.

If you are only using this DOL starter for convenience, and to provide "no volt release" in event of power failure for safety, then the overload is not required, just recommended.

I will take your recommendation and use a overload unit.

Can I ask for clarification, on your first post you said:

I welcome your thoughts particularly on... bottom T1 to top L2. Is this is correct??

Yes.

As the middle way is essentially unused, you are meant to loop either the neutral or live through it so the overload is more accurate in sensing over current.

Live out the bottom of the T1, fed back into the top of L2, then back out the bottom of T2 to the motor.

Here is a pic from a while back which I did for someone else.  I looped the neutral through the spare contact here.

Imagine the L1 L2 L3 at the top to simply switch the T1 T2 T3 at the bottom when the contactor energises.

On yours, the stop button is seperate, and would be wired in series with the contacts on the overload.  My drawing shows the stop button integrated into the overload.

Thank you again, particularly for your patience.
I will wait for the overload switch and carry out your advice.
I will post again following my connecting to both thank you and telling you that my workshop has not gone into orbit!!!

Again thank you.

Thank you Lectrician

To make it easier for me to understand can you work with the attached pic and show the correct wiring.

Hi, can I use the same principle to wire up a 3 phase DOL to 4 and 8 HP motors with remote switches?
Here is the issue I am having. Am having trouble getting the original relays for the DOL boxes I have and now the buttons on the covers of the DOL dont match up with the stop on the relay. I am wanting to wire up remote switches on the metal panel box where the starters are housed in.
Thanks,
Z
