Title: OIL TANK FIRE BARRIER
Post by fred09 on Dec 17th, 2015, 1:04pm

Can anyone tell me what I should use to make a fire barrier for an oil tank. It sits too close to a fence and the back of the building and has no where else to go so it needs a fire barrier, but so far all I've been told is to use Hardibacker but this isn't certified as fire proof as it's a tile backer. Any ideas, anyone done this before?

I would ask the building inspector what he would like to see to make the tank compliant.

I had to move some electrics recently to allow an oil tank to be installed adjacent a building.  It had breeze block walls on all for sides, a block and beam roof, stabbed over the top, and a metal access door.

Tank was plastic, feed to the tank 20m away, in 2" steel pipe, with remote fill gauge.

This was commercial, although only feeding boilers for a B&B.

Yes speak to Building Control. I think outside walls of houses have a minimum fire rating anyway? May only be an issue if it's timber clad or has windows? Building control can sometimes take a relaxed view if there isn't a house on the other side of the fence and/or if the building you mention is a detached garage or shed.

Edit..

See Table 10 on page 63..

If within 1.8m of a building the building walls must be 30min fire rated but I think most brick houses will meet that anyway? Different matter if there is timber cladding or tank is near the eaves?
