as if my wallet hasn't had enough of a hammering already, the washing machine coughed it's last. so a fun* morning out to the local euronics dealer, and we've not got a nice shiny new LG direct drive thing. creepily quiet! apart from the drain pump, it's quieter than the dishwasher :o

but the problem is that it shuts the water inlet off very violently, causing very loud water hammer. I've fitted one of these mini shock arrester things, which has toned it down loads, but not eliminated it completely. would adding a second one make any difference?

Presumably those things just trap a bubble of air which being compressible acts as a shock absorber... so perhaps you can make a bigger one any size you like out of a length of 22mm pipe or whatever you have in the scrap box.

I noticed one reviewer said his took a week to work - perhaps it took that long to fill up with air?

i did try to shove my borescope up it to see what was inside, but i couldn't get it round the corner. i always assumed they worked in a similar way to a heating pressure vessel, with a membrane separating the 2 sides of it

I know in America they put a foot long stab of copper pipe vertically up inside the wall with a stop end at the top, just prior to the pipe coming out of the wall to the tap. This is to prevent water hammer. I wonder if this is a similarly simple device?

They are not allowed on potable water though I don't think? They end up with stagnant water trapped in them. Fine for the washing machine though.
