Hi,
I've recently bought my first house which requires its fair share of work and up to about a fortnight ago I hadn't so much as painted a skirting board so its a steep learning curve at the moment.

Anyway to the point our utility connects to our kitchen and there is no door in the doorway. The utility is all single brick wall with no insulation. We therefore want to reduce the heat loss and I was wondering if installing a fire door would have much benefit over a standard door for heat insulation or if it would just be a waste of money which would be better spent on other things such as saving towards a new boiler to replace the 38yr old one we currently have.

A fire door is thicker than a typical internal door so it's likely to be slightly more thermally efficient but they take a lot more fitting as they are so heavy and I doubt it would be of that much benefit to you. It would definitely be worth fitting some draught excluder round the door though. The new boiler sounds a better bet and you may find you qualify for a grant toward it if you apply.

A fire door differs from your bog-standard door because it's either fire resistant, or it's both fire and smoke resistant. for more details visit:

Why not get a standard external A-rated backdoor as though the utility isn't there
