Title: SELV Chandelier ???
Post by wozzer on Sep 8th, 2018, 3:03pm

I have been asked if it is possible to adapt an old metal 5-lamp fitting to 12V and install it above a bath.
The fitting is fairly vintage, and has (at the moment wired for 240V AC) 5-off 25W lamps on it - It sort of looks like a bunch of corn stalks if anyone has seen something like it.

At 12V it is SELV, granted - But what about zoning? this would be in Zone 1, and the ceiling height is 2.54 Mtr. Therefore the fitting would be potentially low enough for someone to touch if they stood up in the bath and reached for it. Nor would it be IP44.
Where do I stand on this one - Never been asked for this before and have never seen the like.  :-?
Advice please!

Belt and braces would be to use a small isolating transformer ?

Even then the luminaire needs to be suitably IP rated  :-/

If it's just used occasionally and for decoration rather than main lighting you could use batteries to power it, that way it doesn't have to comply with anything.

What sort of bulbs does it need?

Perhaps you can wire in LEDs permanently and make any joints IP44 by  potting them or using heatshrink?
