I read acrylic paint is bet is that true?

No. There are specialist paints for metal such as Hammerite, if you want to use a traditional paint finish you would need to use a metal primer first but even then I would think you would be better with an oil based paint rather than a water based one.

What sort of metal?

It can be hard to paint galvanised steel - it pools up like putting water on wax. Even primer recommended for it proved tricky.
