Title: Corrugated (asbestos?) Roof sheets
Post by Natedog on Nov 3rd, 2020, 4:33pm

The lockup im buying has got corrugated roof that I'm going to assume is asbestos as I don't know.  I need to get up on it to remove ivy.  Its a fairly shallow roof, with a fall of about a foot over the 15 foot width.  It is supported at either and and along the middle with timbers.

Helpfully, I've only got access from one end.  Is it likely to be OK to just lie a roof ladder direct onto it, or am I going to need to stick something else under it to spread the load more?

Asbestos is notoriously dangerous to walk on, is there any way you can do this without going on the roof? Roof ladders are designed for a normally pitched roof, not much use when the roof is this flat. Could you use a cherry picker? Or just spray the ivy from a distance?

The building is roughly 15x40 foot, and I've only got access from one 15 foot end currently.  The other end might be accessible in a few weeks, if I can get the door that end to open (its an outward opening pedestrian door that is currently blocked by ivy on the outside - hoping to get it open with a sawzall)

Started clearing it out.  6 huge bags of ivy gone from the inside for starters, and I'm only half way into it  :o

Having put up a couple of temporary lights inside so we could work after dark, I could see the state of the timber that supports the roof.  It looks like rain has been running along the ivy stems and soaking the wood, meaning that most of it is now rather rotten.

Got an asbestos specialist coming out next week to quote for taking the roof off complete with ivy, and replacing with insulated corrugated steel.  Saves me worrying about removing the ivy i guess, but its going to be more than I was hoping to spend.

It will be a lot more secure with a metal roof.

Do you mean in terms of anti-theft or in terms of having the roof fall on my head?  ;D

Still struggling to find someone who wants to take on this roofing job :( I tried s few places who specialise in domestic garage roof replacement, and its too big for them.  Tried a few places who do larger roofs (2 companies who have repaired the roof on the warehouse at work) and its too small for them.

Do any of you know anyone in the Swindon / cirencester area who might be interested?

Many years ago a neighbour of mine fell through the asbestos roof of his garage and landed on a lawnmower. Heard the screaming 50 yards away. Good luck.

Hope it wasn't running CW, reminds me of a horror film I watched years ago where the baddie through the victim in the wood chipper.

I know you've all been desperate to know what happened with my workshop roof  ;D

Well just before Christmas i decided to quit my job and set up as self employed, so i'd have more time to stuff that i want to do, rather than living in a truck for 5 1/2 days a week.  That means I need to be able to work in the workshop.  Finally managed to get a local Ivy removal guy to come and clear the roof, so then I could get an asbestos company to come and remove the old sheets.  replaced all the timber frame like for like with tanalised new.  Then chucked some box profile insulated sheets on the top.  Hopefully it's not going to get too warm in the summer now - the one good thing about the ivy was it insulated and shaded the place very well!!

It's not perfect, but it's the first time i've ever done anything like this.  Most importantly, it doesn't appear to leak!  There has been a bit of condensation on the underside of the roof, but i'm hoping this will go away once it starts to dry out in there.  getting the walls painted on the outside will hopefully help with that, and it would be nice to stick some dpc down and drop a few inches of concrete on the floor - partly as the floor doesn't have a dpc at the moment, and partly to give a nice flat floor for working on

That looks a smart job, I’ve never used those panels myself but they look a good solution for this sort of roof.
