Title: What are these pipes?
Post by Kerrym on Apr 17th, 2021, 9:10pm

Hi I have these pipes they are in every room, I’m in a terraced house in wales and I know my neighbours and there neighbours also have them, so I think the whole of the terraced houses that are together have them. Everyone I’ve spoken to hasn’t a clue on what they are. I’m getting them boxed in but would like to know what they are. Hopefully someone can help. Many thanks

Do they not tee off anywhere? Anything either side of the walls?

It’s possible they are structural ties which run the length of the buildings and help to hold them all together. If you look at the terrace end walls you would probably be able to see spreader plates that they are bolted into.

I'm inclined to agree with Woodsmith, a few pics of the outside walls  ( front and ends) But saying that they don't look in the right place unless they are holding a dormer together.

My first thought was a gas pipe for gas lights etc, but again they don't look in the right place, although there looks to be a fitting at each end to support the theory

Scruff, they would be holding the corners of the terrace together and be around gutter height. My house has something very similar.

Yes Woodsmith I have seen them many times before, but never lengthwise to the roof
