Title: Spraying oil based paint
Post by Natedog on Apr 29th, 2022, 11:39am

If you think it a bit with some white spirit, can you spray oil based paint (specifically dulux satinwood) with one of those electric sprayers?  It says on the tin that you can't spray because of the health risk from VOCs, but that's easily sorted with a respirator.  Is there any other reason why you can't do it?

I haven’t tried an electric sprayer other than for water based fence coating as the one I had was a bit too coarse for any sort of fine finish. Not sure if the latest ones are any better. As for spraying oil based paint you not only have the risk from breathing in the vapour but also the serious fire/ explosion risk. If possible I would use a water based paint, they are much better than they used to be and can give an excellent and hard wearing finish. My favourite is Farrow and Ball estate eggshell with a dash of Flowtrol added, but other paints are available. ;D
