Removing Stains From Kauri Pine
Apr 25th, 2004, 1:44am

Okay everyone, you can blame BigAl, Jasonb and Dewy for this....  Thanks for the info

I am restoring a circa 1910 kauri pine extendable table with turned legs.  It has previously had an oil and wax finish.

I am attempting to remove the old finish from the legs with metho and steel wool, but this is leaving a milky residue (on the legs).

Any tips on how best to remove this old finish? I have been advised that steel wool may not be the best option.

Another good site I have found is
www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au

Regards.

Welcome Bunch. If I remember rightly you were told on the other forum that the milky residue is the wax mixed with the meths.
The advice given was to remove as much wax as possible 1st before finishing cleaning it.
The metho is a solvent & disolves the wax.
Renovating anything can be a bit of a pain. The antique restorers dip the piece in a caustic solution to remove paint & varnish etc. Unfortunately the caustic goes into the wood which should then be re oiled.
